To understand the soft zone, you first need to understand how these massive bearings are manufactured.
Slewing rings carry extreme loads, so the internal raceways (the tracks where the balls or rollers move) must be hardened to withstand friction and pressure. Manufacturers use a process called induction hardening to heat-treat these raceways.
However, when the heating element travels completely around the circular raceway, it cannot overlap the starting point. If the hardened ends overlap, the extreme thermal stress will cause the steel to crack. Therefore, the hardening process stops just short of the starting point, leaving a small, unhardened gap.
This unhardened gap is the slewing bearing soft zone.
Why Do Slewing Bearings Have a Soft Zone?
You might wonder, why do slewing bearings have a soft zone if it creates a weaker point in the steel? It serves two unavoidable engineering purposes:
- Preventing Heat-Treatment Cracks: As mentioned above, it prevents the raceway from cracking during the induction hardening process.
- The Loading Plug Area: The soft zone is almost always located exactly where the “loading plug” is. After the inner and outer rings are machined, the steel balls or cylindrical rollers are inserted into the raceway through a drilled hole. Once filled, a metal plug seals this hole. Because the plug is a separate piece of metal, this area inherently lacks the continuous hardened strength of the rest of the raceway.
How to Identify the Slewing Ring Soft Zone Mark
Because the soft zone is the weakest point of the bearing, you must know exactly where it is. Fortunately, manufacturers make this easy to spot.
Before installation, thoroughly inspect the top and bottom faces of the bearing. You will find the slewing ring soft zone mark indicated by one of the following methods:
- A stamped letter “S” on the face of the inner or outer ring.
- A painted colored line (usually red, blue, or yellow) across the face.
- A visible circular plug outline on the ring’s surface, often secured with a taper pin.
Note: Both the inner ring and the outer ring have their own separate soft zones. You must identify both.
The Correct Slewing Bearing Soft Zone Location During Installation
This is the most critical part of any slewing bearing installation guide. Because the soft zone is unhardened, it cannot withstand maximum operational loads.

How to Position It:- For the Outer Ring (Stationary): Position the soft zone at a 90-degree angle to the primary load axis. For example, on an excavator, if the main digging force acts along the front-to-back axis of the undercarriage, place the outer ring’s “S” mark on the left or right side (the lateral axis).
- For the Inner Ring (Rotating): Position the soft zone directly opposite to the maximum overturning moment. If the inner ring supports a heavy crane boom, place the “S” mark at the back of the rotating cab, under the counterweight, where the downward pressure is lowest during a heavy lift.
